This 2016 wedding photo is a special one for me. As a hobbyist photographer back then, weddings terrified me - the stress, the crowd, the high stakes if anything went wrong. But I eventually mustered the courage to say yes to this couple.
The most meaningful part is capturing that magical, loving spark on a couple's wedding night. Most Australian weddings follow the cultural flow of a daytime ceremony and evening reception. But it all goes by in a flash, with little time for the newlyweds to simply be present with each other amidst all the love and celebration.
So during a break, I encouraged them to sneak away for a quiet moment together. We went to a dirt road with surrounding trees, and I set up my camera on a tripod for an 8-10 second exposure. Using candlelight sparklers, I moved in a circular motion around the couple to create that glowing ring effect in the image. Their stillness amid the long exposure made them the focal point.
It was a chance to freeze a private, magical moment for two people in love on their wedding night - the kind of behind-the-scenes effort that hopefully results in cherished memories.
